Meeting your characters in a story can be awkward at times for all concerned. I mean, all writers play god with their creations, but actually coming on stage and acting out the role in front of them is another matter. My approach tends to be something like a reverse Wizard of Oz – “pay attention to the man behind the curtain,” as it were.

Me: Yes, I know it is. I’m sorry.

Spooky: I thought… I mean, I knew I was never real.
Spooky: I escaped from a B-movie, for fuck sake. But I thought… you know. At least now I’m writing myself, right?
Ignatz: Mew?
Spooky: Except now you tell… now none of this is real.
Me: I never said this wasn’t real.
Me: Think about it. What’s really changed since yesterday?
Me: You’re a story in a world of stories, Spooky. Everything is as real as you want it to be.

Spooky: Yesterday…
Me: Seems like a long time ago, doesn’t it?
Me: Like weeks instead of hours.
