As well as including a nice meta use of animation which I’m still quite pleased with, this strip also touches on a few different ideas being tossed about in the world of US print comics back in 2005. Arguments about the merits of decompression in comics were raging – decompression meaning essentially less amount of plot in a monthly comic to allow room to breakdown the action or emotion/mood across more panels. And at that time thought bubbles had been more or less abandoned by most mainstream writers as outmoded or klunky, while a few creators were reacting against this and looking to rehabilitate them in interesting ways. However, despite such interesting discussions of the form taking place, US comics remained mostly about dudes punching other dudes in the face.
