My notes reveal that I came up with the core of this strip – namely that last line – in the pub, long before I started Brain Fist. Snippets like that can hang around for years in notebooks or word files until I figure out exactly where they belong.

I asked my mother once.
Why it always had to end in tears.
And I remember she… she just looked at me.
So much sadness in her eyes.
And then she sighed. And said simply:
