Being the weekly journals of Mr. Nile – a self-aware narrative entity and recent arrival in the sprawling west coast conurbation of Anyopolis, USA. The series originally ran at Serializer back in 2003 but then fell of the face of the web following a particularly horrible server crash in 2004. The entire series is now… Continue reading The Nile Journals: Rebroadcast
Ah, memories! Sometimes I kinda miss being a giant floating eye. Mr. Nile has made appearances in a whole bunch of comics at E-merl over the years, but if you want a quick intro you’re probably best off reading the original Mr. Nile Experiment from way back in 2003.
Nile’s supporting cast – his housemate Spooky Lizard and old feline friend Ignatz – actually made their first appearance in Sixgun back in 2001. Although in terms of continuity, the Sixgun story actually takes place a few years after The Nile Journals. (Jesus, I’ve got continuity now! When did that happen?)
I mentioned Sixgun last week and then later realised I should probably mention that The Nile Journals take place inside my alternate reality Unfolded Earth setting. Sixgun will give you a decent grounding in the weirdness of the Unfolded Earth and then for some extra credit you should check out The Last Sane Cowboy, which… Continue reading 3. Movements In Space And Time
You’ve probably noticed by now that The Nile Journals runs using Flash and as such contains little bits of animated content every now and then. Usually these are used to indicate something happening that goes against the usual flow of reality. Occasionally, like this week, the animation becomes a bit more central to the action… Continue reading 4. Bikini Pageant Apocalypse
So you might have noticed by now that I’m being wordier than usual underneath The Nile Journals comic posts. The idea being, since this is a rebroadcast of old content, that I take the opportunity to provide a little extra DVD-cometary-track -style content to accompany each comic. It is in this spirit that I inform… Continue reading 5. A Short Prelude To Insanity
When I first started The Nile Journals I thought they’d all be stand alone strips – the fact that each page was supposed to be a separate day in Mr. Nile’s life pretty much dictated that. It took me only about a month of actually working on the series to discover how wrong I was,… Continue reading 6. The Long Bad Tuesday ~ 1
Nile began his hate-hate association with George Bush in the original Mr. Nile Experiment. Like much of the free world, I found Bush’s idocy rather hard to stomache and so took whatever opportunity for retribution my little corner of reality afforded me. As a fictional character, I actually began to find myself endeered towards Bush’s… Continue reading 7. The Long Bad Tuesday ~ 2
The Journals were originally intended to be black and white strips – I only took the decision to make them full colour and partially animated about a week before the first episode went live (after taking a look around the great starting line up at Serializer, I decided black and white just wasn’t going to… Continue reading 8. The Long Bad Tuesday ~ 3
The “zombie Dick Cheney” line remains a personal favourite of mine from the series. And hey look, 3D camera rotation! Though I suspect James Cameron has nothing to fear from Nile & Co. for a few years yet.
